Only a decade ago, medicinal treatments for premature ejaculation were basically unheard of. Ironically most pharmaceutical companies chose to focus on erectile dysfunction as the primary sexual problem for men – despite the fact that only 10% of men experience erection problems – compared to approximately 40% of men who have problems with premature ejaculation. Now that drugs like Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis are developed and well established, many of these companies are now working on products to effectively combat PE. While there can be many causes of premature ejaculation, there are also effective ways to treat this problem and boost sexual stamina.
Drugs that increase serotonin levels in the brain have shown to delay ejaculation and have been used successfully to treat premature ejaculation. These include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), and fluoxetine (Prozac), as well as clomipramine (Anafranil). None of these drugs have been approved for use in treating PE, however they are sometimes prescribed by doctors for off-label use.
Ejaculatory delay typically begins within a week of beginning medication. The treatments with SSRI’s increase the ejaculatory delay to 6–20 times greater than before medication. Unfortunately – as with most pharmaceutical drugs – there can be a plethora of unpleasant side effects, so there are many pros and cons for usage. While some men report satisfaction with treatment by medication, many discontinue using these drugs within a year. SSRIs can cause various types of sexual dysfunction such as erectile dysfunction, diminished libido, and anorgasmia, These problems can last for months, years, or sometimes permanently after the discontinuation of SSRIs. In effect you can be trading one sexual dysfunction for another – something many men are not willing to do.
Some drugs which are in varying stages of development for treating premature ejaculation include Dapoxetine (brand name – Priligy), Paroxetine (Paxil), and Tramadol – however none of these drugs have been approved in North America. Dapoxetine – sold under the brand name Priligy – is probably the closest to being approved here, as Priligy is already available to purchase in Europe, by prescription only.
While it may be a few years before FDA approved drugs for premature ejaculation are available in the US or Canada, there are a few natural treatments for PE that have shown promise. One of the best natural solutions for premature ejaculation is Prexil, an herbal blend designed to boost serotonin levels and testosterone production in men. Most men have experienced improvement in ejaculation latency with Prexil, and it appears to be well tolerated by most men.
